Edyn Chalcu

A FEW MINUTES WITH EDYN CHALCU OF CORE INVESTMENTS, INC.

Edyn Chalcu is a Senior Project Accountant at Core Investments, Inc. He joined the company in September 2023.

What do you actually do for Core?

I work as an accountant. I do financial reporting, bank reconciliations, and different types of reporting based on my portfolio. I also work very closely with the development team. I make sure they process all invoices and expenses in our system based on the ongoing work on-site. We have a project with ACORE Capital [a Core Investments investor partner], and I do monthly draws with a disbursement request and send it to them to be able to get the funds so we can pay invoices.

What did you do before Core?

I was working in real estate as well, for HYM [Investment Group] for almost four years. That was my first job here in the U.S. I’m actually from Guatemala and moved here four and a half years ago with my family. Tom [O’Brien, managing partner of HYM] gave me the opportunity to work for them. I worked there as a project accountant for the Suffolk Downs project. I wasn’t looking for a job, but a recruiter reached out to me for this opportunity, so I decided to join Core and I like it.

Where did you go to school?

I went to school in Guatemala. I have a bachelor’s degree in public accounting and auditing. I studied there at Mariano Galvez University in Guatemala City. I studied for a full six years, and after that I had to do three tests to be able to get my degree there.

And where did you grow up?

I grew up in a small town Sololá, it’s like a state, not in the city. It’s three hours’ driving from Guatemala City. I speak Spanish, English, and the Mayan language, my first language.

Where do you live now?

I live in Somerville. We just bought a house with my family. We moved in a month ago. I have three kids and my wife. She works for a nonprofit organization — Mil Milagros [“A Thousand Miracles”] that helps people in Guatemala.

What do you like to do when you’re not working?

I like going to the gym, working out. I like to enjoy time with my kids. My oldest son is 9, and my daughter is 7 this month. My youngest son is 2 years and 10 months.

What’s a favorite place of yours in the Boston area?

I like to go to Boston Common. It’s nice over there. We normally go with the kids. It’s a huge park, and they like it.

Is there anything else new in your life?

Well, we just bought the house, which we are so excited about. That’s something new, and starting a new job here at Core, that’s something really great too. Another thing is I just became a U.S. Citizen two months ago.
